Pinterest vs. Snap: Which Media Stock Is a Better Buy Going into 2027?

The digital advertising world is shifting from simple social feeds to platforms that drive direct consumer action. Investors deciding between Pinterest (PINS -4.19%) and Snap (SNAP -2.55%) must weigh which strategy wins.

Pinterest serves as a digital corkboard for inspiration and shopping, while Snap focuses on private communication and augmented reality through its Snapchat app. Both companies are competing for a larger share of global ad budgets among the social media stocks landscape, making them an ideal pair for comparison.

The case for Pinterest

Pinterest operates a visual search platform where users find ideas for everything from home decor to fashion. Unlike traditional social media, users often arrive with specific intent, which allows the company to offer full-funnel advertising campaigns to brands and retailers. In its latest annual report, Pinterest noted that it generates revenue primarily through advertising from a wide range of brands, retailers, and agencies across sectors like technology, travel, and financial services.

In its 2025 fiscal year (FY), ended Dec. 31, revenue reached $4.2 billion, representing a growth rate of 15.8% compared to the prior year. This top-line expansion helped the company achieve net income of $416.9 million for the period. The net margin, which shows how much profit a company keeps from every dollar of sales, was 9.9%. This performance shows a clear trend toward profitability compared to previous fiscal periods as the company scales its user base.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the current ratio stood at 7.6x, suggesting the company has ample liquid assets to cover its short-term obligations. The debt-to-equity ratio was 0.1x, which compares total debt against the portion of the company owned by shareholders. Free cash flow, the cash remaining after a business pays for its operating costs and capital expenditures, reached $1.3 billion. Note that stock-based compensation (SBC) represented 68.6% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

The case for Snap

Snap focuses on its camera-first application, Snapchat, which helps users communicate with friends and family. The company differentiates itself through augmented reality (AR) and localized content, serving a massive audience of daily active users. It also generates revenue through subscription services, which has grown to over 30 million paid subscribers as of the third quarter of 2026. Snap relies on technology partners like Amazon for infrastructure and works with developers on physical hardware like its AR glasses.

In FY 2025, ended Dec. 31, revenue reached $5.9 billion, a growth of 10.6% over the previous year. Despite this growth, the company reported a net loss of $460.5 million for the period. The net margin was negative 7.8%, though this was an improvement over the deeper losses reported in earlier years. The company continues to invest heavily in its augmented reality capabilities and subscriber services to diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional digital ads.

Based on its December 2025 balance sheet, the current ratio was 3.6x, indicating a solid buffer for meeting short-term financial commitments. The debt-to-equity ratio was 2.1x, which indicates that the company's total debt is more than double the value of shareholder equity. Free cash flow for the period was $437.2 million, measuring the cash a company generates after accounting for capital investments. Note that stock-based compensation represented 155% of operating cash flow, meaning reported cash generation is heavily inflated by this non-cash add-back.

SNAP & PINS: Performance Comparison

Key Financial Metrics

Risk profile comparison

Pinterest faces heavy reliance on advertising revenue, making the company vulnerable to fluctuations in broad marketing spend. It faces intense competition for user attention and ad budgets from larger, well-resourced platforms like Amazon and fellow social media rival Meta Platforms. Additionally, the company manages legal and regulatory risks concerning data privacy and teen safety, including multiple securities class action lawsuits. Relying on third-party infrastructure like Amazon also adds a layer of operational risk.

Snap also relies substantially on advertising, which accounted for approximately 87% of its total revenue in 2025. The company competes with Meta Platforms, Pinterest, and others for both user time and advertiser interest. Snap is currently managing thousands of pending lawsuits related to teen mental health and addictive design claims. Furthermore, its business depends on the mobile operating systems of providers such as Apple.

Valuation comparison

Pinterest is more expensive based on its Forward P/E against future earnings estimates, and Snap also has a lower P/S ratio using sales over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy for 2027?

Between Pinterest and Snap, although the latter is cheaper from a valuation perspective, I would buy the former. I used to own shares of Snap and sold them because the company has struggled for years under CEO and co-founder Evan Spiegel. It finally reached profitability in the third quarter of this year, yet in its key North American market, average daily active users declined year over year to 92 million. This suggests Snap is having difficulty retaining users in its most important market.

Pinterest's monthly active users in North America rose 4% year over year to 107 million, indicating rising popularity. Its Q3 global monthly active users of 661 million was an all-time high. The company has also been consistently profitable over the last couple of years, demonstrating superior financial health compared to Snap.

Moreover, Pinterest's value proposition for consumers as a visual discovery engine is different from social media competitors such as Snap and Meta. The company's Q3 revenue of $1.2 billion represented 12% year-over-year growth, but would have been higher if not for European regulators ending tax exemptions on cheap cross-border imports, which forced international sellers to pull back ad spending, causing Pinterest's Q3 revenue in the region to be flat year over year. This headwind should subside over time as sellers adjust to the new tax environment in Europe.
