Brent futures declined $1.78, or 2.0%, to $86.80 per barrel as of 0027 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures fell $1.49, or 1.8%, to $80.87. Both benchmarks had dropped more than 3% on Tuesday.
An analyst at Fujitomi Securities observed that the market remains responsive to developments concerning transit through the Strait of Hormuz, and that expectations for advancement in Iranian-Omani negotiations have prompted selling. He added that lingering uncertainty regarding the outlook has encouraged bargain hunting, which has curbed additional declines, and that prices are apt to stay within a defined trading range in the near term.
Iran stated it had resumed dialogue with Oman on managing the strait, as it contends with mounting economic strain from U.S. President Donald Trump. The two nations have engaged in intermittent discussions for weeks over regulating movement through the waterway, which carried one-fifth of global crude and liquefied natural gas volumes prior to the conflict that started in February. On Tuesday, both sides indicated they had addressed a proposed joint temporary navigational corridor through the strait and concurred on efforts to remove mines from the area.
Notwithstanding persistent frictions, the United States is starting to redeploy personnel to select diplomatic posts in the Middle East that had been evacuated or scaled back amid tensions with Iran, according to two sources familiar with the situation. This action implies that Washington perceives a diminished likelihood of near-term escalation in the confrontation with Iran, although certain embassies will initially function at reduced capacity.
On Monday, Washington broadened sanctions designed to sever Iran's economic lifeline, warning of penalties for nations that persist in commercial dealings with Tehran, while clarifying that such punitive measures would not be enacted immediately.
In a separate incident, an oil tanker was hit on Tuesday by an unidentified projectile and rendered inoperable roughly 9 nautical miles (17 km) northeast of Oman's Ash Shishah, a location at the strait's entrance, as reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations.
In the United States, the American Petroleum Institute indicated that crude stockpiles increased by approximately 4.2 million barrels during the week ending August 21, per market sources. Analysts surveyed by Reuters had projected an average build of about 600,000 barrels. Official figures from the EIA, the statistical branch of the U.S. Department of Energy, are scheduled for release at 10:30 a.m. ET (1430 GMT) on Wednesday.
