Eli Lilly's Foundayo Wins UK Approval

· Nasdaq Market Structure

(RTTNews) - Eli Lilly and Company's (LLY) oral GLP-1 pill Foundayo has secured UK regulatory approval for weight management and type 2 diabetes, making the UK the first European country to clear the once-daily tablet.

The decision by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on August 10, 2026, follows the U.S. FDA's approval in April 2026, positioning Foundayo as a key entrant in the competitive obesity and diabetes market.

Foundayo (orforglipron) is a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist designed for convenient daily use without food or water restrictions. Clinical data from the ATTAIN-1 and ACHIEVE-1 trials demonstrated meaningful weight loss and HbA1c reductions compared with placebo, with tolerability largely limited to mild gastrointestinal side effects during dose escalation. The drug offers patients an oral alternative to injectable GLP-1 therapies, broadening treatment options in a fast-growing therapeutic class.

The UK approval covers adults with obesity and early type 2 diabetes, with a NICE appraisal scheduled for November 18, 2026, to determine NHS reimbursement. This sets the stage for potential widespread adoption if pricing and access align with clinical demand.

On financial terms, Foundayo has already begun contributing to Lilly's top line. In its second quarter 2026, the company reported $98 million in Foundayo revenue, part of a broader 48% increase in total revenue to $23.0 billion, driven by its incretin portfolio including Mounjaro and Zepbound. The early sales signal commercial momentum as Lilly expands Foundayo's reach beyond the U.S. into Europe.

This dual UK approval represents a milestone for Lilly, reinforcing its position in metabolic disease therapies and underscoring the company's strategy to diversify its GLP-1 offerings. With FDA approval and UK approval now in place, Foundayo is positioned to become a significant oral competitor in obesity and diabetes care.

LLY has traded between $629.40 and $1,249.45 over the past year. The stock closed Monday's trading at $1,231.94, up 3.90%. During the overnight trading session, the stock is at $1,229.01, down 0.24%.
