U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s proposal regarding the Strait of Hormuz. The American leader made this statement to reporters at the White House.
“They made a proposal, but I rejected it,” Trump said (as quoted by RIA Novosti).
On August 26, The Wall Street Journal reported that the president intends to resume bombing Iran after the midterm elections in November. The publication also noted that Trump rejected Iran’s proposal, which would have involved opening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming negotiations on the nuclear program in exchange for lifting the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.
According to CNN, Tehran’s proposal requires Washington to fulfill a number of conditions within seven days. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made this statement to reporters. He declined to specify these conditions but said they were “no more than” what was included in the memorandum of understanding—an agreement signed by both sides in June that quickly collapsed.
In response to Araghchi’s comments, a White House spokesperson told CNN that the parties are engaged in “positive and constructive discussions through intermediaries.” According to the spokesperson, the United States is in a very strong position, controlling the Strait of Hormuz, so it is in no hurry.
Iran’s conditions include the U.S. lifting sanctions on oil sales, ending the naval blockade, and ceasing other economic sanctions imposed after the agreement collapsed in June, a regional source familiar with the negotiations told CNN.
On September 23, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran is ready for dialogue with the U.S. but does not accept the language of force. On September 22, Trump addressed the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. He denied rumors that the U.S. military had run out of modern weapons due to the war with Iran and noted that he would have to make an important decision regarding the resumption of strikes against Tehran.
